Online Legionella Responsible Person Training – UK Course
Online Legionella Responsible Person Training for Businesses, Landlords & Duty Holders
If you have been appointed to manage Legionella risks within a workplace, rental property or other premises, you need to understand more than simply what Legionella is. A Responsible Person needs practical knowledge of the water system, the control measures being used, the records that should be maintained and what action to take when something is not right.
Our Online Legionella Responsible Person Training provides structured, practical training that can be completed from anywhere in the UK. The course is suitable for Responsible Persons, duty holders, landlords, business owners, facilities staff, property managers and others involved in managing Legionella risks.
The course is self-paced, so there are no scheduled classes or webinars to attend. Learners work through seven structured modules, complete knowledge checks and then take a 25-question final assessment. A personalised certificate is available following successful completion.

What Is a Legionella Responsible Person?
Organisations responsible for managing the risk from Legionella need suitable arrangements for controlling that risk. Depending on the size and structure of the organisation, a competent person may be appointed to take day-to-day responsibility for implementing and managing those arrangements.
In smaller organisations, the Responsible Person may be the business owner, manager, landlord, maintenance person or another member of staff. In larger organisations the role may sit with a facilities manager, compliance manager or dedicated water-safety team.
Whatever the job title, the important issue is competence. The person needs sufficient knowledge and understanding to carry out their responsibilities effectively and to recognise when additional specialist assistance is required.
Who Is Online Responsible Person Training Suitable For?
Online training can be particularly useful where an individual needs structured Legionella training without attending a classroom course or arranging a trainer to visit the premises.
- Responsible Persons
- Duty holders
- Business owners and managers
- Landlords and property managers
- Letting agents
- Facilities and maintenance staff
- Care and healthcare staff with water-hygiene responsibilities
- Nursery and childcare managers
- School and education staff
- Office and commercial premises managers
- People responsible for Legionella monitoring and record keeping
Responsible Person Training Is More Than Legionella Awareness
Basic Legionella awareness training can provide a useful introduction to the bacteria, how infection occurs and the types of water systems where risks can develop.
A Responsible Person normally needs a broader practical understanding. They may need to interpret the findings of a Legionella risk assessment, oversee routine monitoring, ensure little-used outlets are managed, maintain records and understand when temperatures or other control measures indicate that further action is necessary.
Training should therefore help the learner understand not only what Legionella is, but how Legionella risks are actually managed in day-to-day operation of a building.
What Should Legionella Responsible Person Training Cover?
The precise responsibilities vary according to the premises and water system, but useful Responsible Person training should provide an understanding of areas including:
- Legionella bacteria and the conditions that encourage growth
- Duty Holder and Responsible Person responsibilities
- Understanding a Legionella risk assessment
- Hot and cold water systems
- Temperature control principles
- Water temperature monitoring
- Little-used outlets and stagnation
- Flushing arrangements
- Showers and other aerosol-producing outlets
- Thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs)
- Scale, sediment and system condition
- Written control arrangements
- Monitoring records and log books
- Corrective action when control measures are not being achieved
- Knowing when specialist advice is required
Understanding Water Temperature Monitoring
Temperature monitoring is one of the most familiar Legionella control activities in hot and cold water systems, but simply recording a number on a sheet is not enough.
The person carrying out or overseeing monitoring should understand why temperatures are being checked, where representative outlets should be selected, what the results mean and what should happen if the expected control parameters are not being achieved.
Practical water temperature monitoring forms an important part of many Legionella control arrangements.
Responsible Person training should help learners understand the purpose behind routine checks rather than simply teaching them to complete paperwork.
Little-Used Outlets, Stagnation and Routine Controls
Stagnation is an important consideration when managing Legionella risks. Outlets that are used infrequently can allow water to remain within pipework for extended periods.
A Responsible Person may therefore need to identify little-used outlets, ensure appropriate flushing arrangements are followed and keep suitable records. They should also understand that continually flushing an outlet is not necessarily the best long-term answer where redundant pipework or unnecessary outlets can be removed.
These are the kinds of practical decisions that make Responsible Person training different from simple awareness training.
Written Schemes, Monitoring Records and Evidence
Good Legionella management relies on more than carrying out checks. Organisations also need appropriate records showing that their control arrangements are actually being implemented.
Depending on the premises, records might include:
- Temperature-monitoring results
- Little-used outlet flushing records
- Inspection and maintenance records
- Corrective actions
- Risk assessment reviews
- Training and competency records
A Responsible Person should understand what records are relevant to their system and why those records matter.
How Our Online Legionella Course Works
Our online course has been designed to provide structured learning without requiring the learner to attend a classroom or scheduled webinar.
The training is divided into seven modules. Learners work through the course in sequence, completing short knowledge checks as they progress.
After completing all seven modules, the learner takes a 25-question final assessment. The pass mark is 75% (19 out of 25).
On successful completion, the learner receives a personalised Legionella Responsible Person Training certificate which can be saved or printed and retained as part of their training and competency records.
The final assessment becomes available after all seven training modules have been completed.
Can Responsible Person Training Be Completed Entirely Online?
Yes. For many learners, a structured online course provides a convenient way to develop the underpinning knowledge needed to understand Legionella management and Responsible Person duties.
However, online training and site-specific practical training serve slightly different purposes. An online course can teach the principles, responsibilities and control measures, while practical on-site training can additionally use the actual water system, outlets, equipment, monitoring records and procedures within a particular building.
For organisations in Doncaster and surrounding South Yorkshire areas that require building-specific practical instruction, we also provide on-site Legionella training in Doncaster.
Online Training or On-Site Legionella Training?
Neither approach is automatically right for every organisation.
Online Responsible Person training is particularly useful where an individual wants structured learning that can be completed at their own pace, from anywhere in the UK.
On-site training can be particularly valuable where staff need instruction relating directly to their own building, water systems, monitoring points and existing procedures.
Some organisations use both: structured online learning to establish the underlying knowledge, supported where necessary by practical instruction specific to the premises.
Training and Competence
Completing a training course is an important part of developing competence, but competence also depends on factors such as knowledge, experience, the complexity of the water system and the responsibilities being undertaken.
Training should therefore help people understand both what they are able to manage themselves and when they need to seek additional competent advice.
This is particularly important where premises contain more complex water systems or where occupants may be especially vulnerable.
Online Legionella Training for Landlords
Landlords have responsibilities for assessing and controlling the risk of exposure to Legionella in rental properties.
A landlord may carry out their own Legionella risk assessment where they are competent to do so. Responsible Person training can help landlords develop a better understanding of domestic water systems, common Legionella risks, temperature control, stagnation, showers, little-used outlets and sensible control measures.
Training does not remove the need to recognise the limits of your own competence. More complex systems or unusual risks may require specialist assessment or advice.
Online Legionella Training for Businesses
For a small business, the person responsible for Legionella management is often someone who already has another role within the organisation.
They may be expected to arrange the risk assessment, understand its recommendations, oversee monitoring, maintain records and make sure identified actions are completed.
A structured online course allows that person to develop the necessary underpinning knowledge without taking a full day away from the workplace for classroom training.
Developed From Practical Legionella Experience
The course has been developed by Paul Watchorn ASET, a practising Legionella Risk Assessor and trainer with more than 25 years’ experience in property and compliance work.
The emphasis is on practical Legionella management: understanding what needs to be checked, why it matters, what records should be maintained and what to do when something is not right.
